Character Information
Name: Ryoji Mochizuki; “Death”
Canon: Persona 3 Portable (Female Route); Video Game
Canon Point: December 31st; waiting for MC to return with SEES’ answer.
Age: 16 (Physically) 10 (Literally) Ageless Abstract Concept (That Whole Death Thing)
Gender: Male
History: Shin Megami Tensei Wikia
Personality: Ryoji is a person who truly adores life. He cherishes every moment he spends alive, especially when he spends it with others. He has a cheerful, friendly personality; before he regained his memory, Ryoji was almost always seen around other people, smiling and laughing. He found joy in simple things, from the daily life of attending school to the sight of light reflecting off of water.

Ryoji is a very sensitive, empathic, and sincere person. He wears his heart on his sleeve: when he’s happy, he laughs and smiles, and when he’s sad, he openly cries. Ryoji cares very deeply about the people around him. He’s someone who genuinely wants to make people happy.

Prone to odd flights of fancy and trains of thought, Ryoji often comes off as flighty and eccentric. He is honest and direct to the point that he sometimes surprises people with his forwardness. While he was attending school, this behavior was excused by the “fact” that he had “lived overseas for many years.” However, the honest truth is that Ryoji has only lived as a human for a two months; many of his memories are second-hand, “borrowed” from the MC. He just doesn’t have the experience or knowledge to be a normal person.

While attending school, Ryoji quickly gained a reputation as a notorious flirt because of his habit of asking girls out on dates within moments of meeting them. Shamelessly flirty and charming, Ryoji treated every girl he met like a princess. He even had the guts (or was perhaps too foolish to understand the depth and breadth of her temper) to ask out the intimidating Student Council President, Mitsuru Kirijo. (“I know a great place on Shirakawa Boulevard!”)

Ryoji also has no common sense whatsoever, doesn’t think things through, and is rather gullible. These traits tend to land him in a lot of trouble, including an incident during a class trip to Kyoto. As a joke, he and Junpei convinced Akihiko to join them in the open air bath during the changeover time from guys only to girls only. P3 FES shows that while Ryoji considered it his “lucky day” that the SEES girls came into the bath, he also thought that they should come clean and apologize.

Beyond his lighthearted and cheerful public face, however, is a young man who was prone to melancholy in private. While Junpei was grieving after Chidori’s death, Ryoji confessed that he believes that “death happens” and that he had a hard time identifying with Junpei’s grief. He was very preoccupied about why he is so drawn to the MC and why she and Aigis felt so familiar to him. Even though he wanted to be with her, he also believed that he would “just make her sad.” Later, if the player decides to take the romantic route of his Social Link, Ryoji was both blissfully happy and distraught being the MC’s significant other: he just couldn’t shake aside the feeling that their relationship was a “forbidden love.” He often needed reassurance that he was “real” – to the point where he asked to be touched so that he could feel that he actually existed.

Once his true memory was triggered by Aigis, Ryoji became very subdued and depressed. He withdrew from school and completely disappeared from Iwatodai. He feels a sense of guilt simply for existing because the Dark Hour and Tartarus only exist because he does. He explained to SEES that as the Appriser of Death and Harbinger of the Fall, “[I] will kill until I am finally satiated.” He also spoke frankly, but eloquently, about the coming Fall and how SEES would be unable to prevent it: “It has nothing to do with strength, ability, or power. Just as all living things die… and the flow of time is continuous… Nyx cannot be defeated.”

Ryoji’s last wish as a human is to spare SEES from the pain of waiting for their inevitable deaths and to grant them a few more months of life. He truly believes that it would be best for the MC to kill him, so that the Dark Hour and all memory of it would disappear. However, when SEES decides to stand and fight to prevent the Fall, he is respects their decision and resolve. In his private farewell to the MC, he asks the MC to keep a ring (one that, to him, represents the time he spent and memories he made as a human) for him and says to her with a smile: “Thank you. I’m sorry. Goodbye. […] I love you.” To SEES, after telling them when and where Nyx will descend so they can fight her, he has only “best of wishes” for them in the coming year.

Abilities Information
Fighter or Sacrifice?: Fighter
Canon abilities: Ryoji is the human self of the Shadow named Death. He is, essentially, a physical representation of an abstract concept. In his world, he could not be truly killed; only his human self could and even that could only happen at the hand of the one who nurtured it. He could change his form between his human self and his “true self” as a Shadow, Thanatos. He is a formidable opponent in battle: when Aigis confronted him on the Moonlight Bridge, his counter was strong enough to keep her out of commission for a month. As the Avatar of Nyx, he is able to shift through the first thirteen Arcana of the Shadows that he is made out of and use their corresponding attacks and skills. When aligned with his true Arcana, Death, he can also use two unique skills: Moonless Gown and Night Queen. Moonless Gown is a defensive skill that reflects any attack or skill back at the user. Night Queen is an offensive skill that deals a large amount of damage and inflicts random status effects.

In Gora, I believe that most of Ryoji’s abilities would be locked down and muted. He would be confined to his human body which would be mortal. He would not be able to use any of His wordspells would reflect and mimic the skills used by the Avatar of Nyx. However, as a nod to his true identity, he would have a “terrifying presence” to those with a spiritual sense or those who are sensitive to death. In wordspell battles, once the system has been engaged, even those who wouldn’t normally sense it would have an instinctive feeling of fear and dread; a very visceral “chill down their spine,” so to speak.

Samples
First Person:

[The feed starts, showing Ryoji sitting at the window of his dorm room. The video is at an odd angle, so it’s obvious that he’s recording it with his phone. He seems very happy and excited, ears alert and facing forward. He’s still in his pajamas, although his scarf is loosely draped across his shoulders. His hair is uncombed, tousled a bit from sleep, and hanging a little in his eyes.]

Good morning, everyone! It’s a beautiful day out today! [Ryoji holds the phone so it can record the obviously beautiful weather: a steady, dreary rainfall, fog, and the sound of grumbling thunder. Ryoji moves the camera back to himself; his smile hasn’t faltered a bit. He seems oblivious to how this statement runs contrary to the actual weather outside...] The fog makes everything seem very mysterious. [He stops to think for a moment, before chuckling.] Ahaha, well, even more mysterious than things already are. Doesn’t it make you want to go explore?

Although, I suppose you’d have to bring an umbrella if you wanted to go outside… but I don’t have a problem with that. [This is a very charming smile.] That is, as long as I have someone to share it with. Would anyone be interested in going for a walk in town with me after breakfast?

Third Person:

Ryoji wakes slowly, not to the usual sound of his alarm clock, but to the sound of a low, distant rumble. Not loud enough to startle him to full awareness, he pulls the blankets over his ears and tries to settle back to sleep.

Not yet, he thinks, thoughts hazy. It’s Sunday. There’s no class on Sunday. While Ryoji loves going to school, it’s hard to treat girls for lunch and a movie during class. With a whole day to work with, the possibilities are endless: lunch and a movie, a walk across town, dinner and a trip to the bookstore…

In the end, it’s not the thunder that tugs him out of bed: it’s the faint, but insistent, sound of something hitting his window. He sits up, blinking blearily at his dimly lit room. It’s a little strange: the room was usually so full of light in the morning. He glances at his alarm clock:

“7:13,” he muses to himself, puzzled. “The sun should be out by now… I think?” He yawns and stretches, pushing the blankets away. He pads over to the room’s single window, sleepily picking his scarf up and settling it comfortably around his shoulder, to push the curtains open and let what little light there is in.

Outside, the world seems washed in gray. Rain falls steadily from a sky heavy and overcast with clouds; raindrops bead on the glass of his window and make slow, meandering trails down to the sill. Fog hangs heavily in the distant trees of the mountains and above the grounds of the school. A rumble of thunder peals through the air, distant and faraway. Everything is very quiet, still, and beautiful.

Ryoji pulls a chair to the window and sits to watch the rain. As he watches, his breath makes fog on the window: he can’t help but doodle in it, even though he knows there will be smears and smudges on the glass that he’ll have to clean up later. But, that’s fine. He doesn’t mind washing windows. He feels lucky to have the chance to do chores; to attend school again; for each and every day he wakes up as himself in Gora.

Yesterday was a beautiful, sunny day. Today is a beautiful, rainy day. Tomorrow, sunny or rainy, will be beautiful. A warm, content feeling wells up in his chest at the thought: it’s too much to keep it to himself. Ryoji manages to pull himself away from the window- but only long enough to grab his cellphone and pull up the communication network. It only takes a moment of fiddling before he smiles broadly up at the phone and says:

“Good morning, everyone! It’s a beautiful outside today!”

Anything Else?

I feel that Ryoji would be a good candidate as a ZERO, if it’s possible to initially designate Fighters as a ZERO. He is already, in many ways, an “artificial” existence: he was born in one of the Kirijo Group’s laboratories. His human self only exists as a result of being confined within the MC’s mind for ten years. As a Shadow and as the Avatar of Nyx, I believe there’s a good chance that pain would be outside those parts of his existence.
